Google My Business (GMB), also known as Google Places and Google Business Listings, is a free tool that allows your physical location, contact details, and opening hours to show up at the top of search engines and on Google Maps. This allows potential customers within your area or anyone searching directly for your business to easily find your contact details and request directions to your business location via your business page.
As an example, if you search ‘SEO Advantage’ into Google, you should see a business profile beside the search results which displays our business information, reviews and photos.
A Google My Business listing allows your business to be shown on Google Maps when you include your business address. Once you set up your Google My Business account, you can claim an address as being yours via the Google My Business dashboard, Google will send you out a letter within 14 days with a pin code to verify your business location and that the business is yours.
Once you register your GMB and it’s up and running with a physical address and verification, it then needs to be optimised for search engines so that you can be seen by potential customers when ranking against your competitors.
GMB optimisation is the process of setting up and tailoring your Google My Business page to your ideal customers and location. Similar to traditional SEO or Google Ads, your Google My Business profile should be optimised with important keywords, a relevant description, important information about your business etc. It’s also important to optimise your GMB listing for consumer trust as well with a website link, photos, reviews, an address, a phone number, and opening hours.
